Nestled between the Pacific Ocean and the redwood forest, New Brighton Cohousing is a small, tightly-knit, intergenerational community. We hold a commitment to knowing each other and living together cooperatively.
Common Spaces & Private Homes
Our cohousing space is a retrofit, meaning we purchased the land with established buildings. We moved in and converted the building and land into a cohousing community. The common spaces are the land and structures that we share, maintain, and own together.
Our residential buildings surround our shared courtyard and face our shared common house. Our townhomes are our own private spaces with private backyards. We get the benefit of privacy and community all in one.
Our three residential buildings house our eleven individually-owned private townhomes.
Most of our townhomes are two bedroom, two full bath units. All are two story units and have complete kitchens and dining areas, as well as a generous second floor balcony facing the community.
Each home has its own fenced backyard. Yards face away from the common space to offer an extra sense of privacy and space. Yards vary in size, but all have enough space for a private patio.
Participation & Play
Our community is designed, owned, and managed by the residents. Members participate in meal preparation once a month, serve on a committee and an affinity group, attend monthly community meetings, as well as contribute to quarterly community-wide work parties.
When we can, we do the maintenance and care of the property ourselves.
We strive to create moments together of joy and delight through parties, facilitated activities, annual celebrations, and day to day interaction.
History
New Brighton Cohousing is an owner-occupied community (no rentals), located in Aptos, California. We were formed out of the umbrella organization Santa Cruz Cohousing in the fall of 2007. Most of the original owners are still here, but we have had a small, healthy turnover. As we say now, this is the perfect time in the life of our community- old enough that all the really hard work of starting a cohousing community has been done, but new enough that we are still open and willing to entertain new ideas to make the community better.
