Golden Gate Cohousing is expanding!
Open houses through October; at least 10 new rental openings.
(UPDATE: This event is proceeding as planned; move-in date delayed due to new construction estimates)
We are a young all-rental nonprofit-owned cohousing community (and longtime EBCOHO Supporting Group member) in northwest Oakland (near Emeryville), a block east of San Pablo Avenue. We have started renovation and expansion of our second building, which we expect to be completed in January May 2017. We’ll have space for at least 10 more residents.
We are starting the process of recruiting new members now because we are inviting people to join the community as (non-resident) provisional members for two to three months. This gives us time to get to know one another, explore our shared values, and work together before we each make a commitment.
Open Houses
We will hold four open houses to allow prospective applicants to learn about the community and see the property:
• Saturday, July 30th from 2 to 5pm
• Thursday, August 4th from 7 to 9pm (RSVP here)
• Saturday, August 27th from 2 to 5pm (RSVP here)
• Thursday, September 1st from 7 to 9pm (RSVP on this page) MAY BE POSTPONED
You may attend more than one if you like. We would appreciate if you would let us know when you plan to come by RSVPing through the appropriate East Bay Cohousing MeetUp links.
Selection Process (LIKELY TO BE POSTPONED)
Applications are due no later than 5pm on September 7th Date TBD (see link to online application below). Interviews will be conducted between September 17th and 24th. Decisions will be made at the end of September. Accepted applicants will begin participating as provisional members in Golden Gate activities in October. Final decisions will be made in late November, anticipating move-in January May 2017.
Apartments and Rooms
The East (newly renovated) House will have three apartments, of two, three, and four bedrooms. The existing West House may have a studio or one-bedroom apartment available. Rents for bedrooms in the East House will range from about $650 to $1,000. Studio and one-bedroom units will be about $1,000 to $1,300. Move-in expense is first and last month’s rent, plus one month’s security deposit.
Common Facilities and People
Shared areas of the community include a large common kitchen, community room, multi-purpose room, laundry, accessible bathroom, guest room, outdoor dining patio, vegetable garden, fruit trees, two roof decks, back yard deck, bike shed, and workshop.
The present community consists of six adults and two teenagers (one part time), in six separate apartments in the West House, plus four non-resident members.

Update 8/26 from Jeff: Hi all. We just found out that the renovation construction of our east house (which will accommodate most of the new members) will not be completed until May, 2017. (We had previously been given a date of January.) As a result, we will most likely delay our new member recruitment activities, although we haven't yet discussed it and set new dates. We imagine that this news will affect some people's interest in pursuing membership, and possibly even attending the open houses tomorrow and next Thursday. So, we wanted you to know. We will still hold the open house tomorrow, but may postpone and this Thursday (9/1)open house. We will also let you know when we have further information about new dates, by either posting here or communicating directly with you. --Golden Gate Cohousing
