Past Events

Here's what's already happened, as a guide to what can happen next.

Our accomplishments in the past few years include talks and a Sustainable Community booth at the San Francisco Green Festival, a Finding Community Fair with an EcoVillage slide show, an all-day Communities Convergence featuring talks on simple living, group process, and community, and a workshop on Starting and Finding Intentional CommunitiesEcoVillages, and Cohousing. We hosted a live group viewing of a Coho/US Webinar featuring Katie McCamant of Cohousing Partners talking about Financing Cohousing, among others.

In 2009 we had even more fun. Here's a selection of some past events so you can see the kinds of things we're up to:

Starting new Ecovillages, Cohousing Neighborhoods, and other Sustainable Communities August 20-21-22, Berkeley, CA

With dynamic presentations, lively small-group exercises, frequent photo-rich slide shows, and many stories and anecdotes about how real-life communities solved their problems, the workshop covers the major steps needed to start and maintain a healthy, thriving Ecovillage, cohousing neighborhood, or other kind of intentional community.

"I don't think I ever learned so much in such a short time."  Susana Michaelis, Pacific Gardens Cohousing, Nanaimo, B.C.

Topics include:

· Antidotes for common kinds of "structural conflict" and interpersonal conflict

· The "Board Game" — demonstrating the relationship between mission, membership process, and decision-making method

· Methods for building trust and connection, increasing social capital, and dealing with "the challenging group member"

“Worth six months of individual research on how to form a new community.”  —David Boddy, San Mateo, California

· Case histories of how real ecovillages purchased, financed & developed their sites

· Permaculture-based site plan design principles and examples from real ecovillages

· Community economics and internal community finances.

"Completely surpassed my expectations . . . incredibly valuable to our future community." —Brooke Lehman, Bluestockings Bookstore Co-op, New York

Diana's workshop is "information-dense" — with 60-90 minute sections and many breaks. A handout booklet is included.

Discover what Sustainable Communities can really feel like, and how they can change the world: Join us for a free look at ecovillages the world over, with Creating a Life Together author and Ecovillages online newsletter publisher Diana Leafe ChristianCommunities magazine editor for most of the past two decades.

Diana, who lives at Earthaven Ecovillage in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, will present "Ecovillages: Where They Are, What They're Doing, Why They're Important," her updated tour of how communities around the world integrate aspects of ecological, economic, and social/cultural/spiritual sustainability.

In hundreds of vivid images, learn how ecovillages manifest:

  • permaculture design
  • natural building
  • off-grid power
  • renewable energy/alternative technology
  • sustainable agriculture
  • Earth-restoration projects
  • international peace activism
  • service to specific populations in need
  • local currencies
  • on-site cottage industries
  • participatory decision-making
  • conflict resolution
  • process and communication skills for bonding and connecting.

Diana, who also wrote the helpful book for community-seekers, Finding Community, shows why ecovillagers are devoted to developing these ecological settlements, how ecovillages are beneficially influencing the wider culture, and how ecovillages will most likely affect patterns of human settlement in the near future.

The presentation shows intentional community-style ecovillages in the Industrialized North, ecologically aware traditional villages in the Global South, and sustainability education centers in both hemispheres. Examples include ecovillage projects in North America, Europe, Africa, Latin America, and Asia.

Tonight's event will be the last chance to sign up for Diana's three-day workshop, beginning the next day in Berkeley, on how to co-create your own EcoVillage, Intentional Community, or Cohousing Neighborhood. Learn more about the workshop on the Cohousing California website - the lowest rates are available with advance registration.

He will kick off the evening with some introductory remarks and images to set the context for the communities movement, and how cohousing and Ecovillages can make a difference in fighting climate change, acting locally to change the world.

Community Living Abroad, Cheap&Warm: Potluck/Conversation (Berkeley, 7/7)

Interested in building community, but frozen out by the Northern California/Bay Area housing market?

Join Hub Bay Area Founding Member/Cohousing Coaches Raines Cohen and Betsy Morris and experienced international resident Linder Allen (former boardmember of the Association of Americans Resident Overseas (AARO)) and EBCOHO members like you for a conversation about community and the many ways to find and co-create it in various warm stable, and affordable places, from Hawaii to France and Egypt (Linder has lived in both) and beyond, for retirement or just simple living. Together with you, we'll outline opportunities and obstacles, debunk myths and solve mysteries, and see who's interested in further exploration, socials, or learning together.

We'll also share some info on more-affordable community living opportunities in the farther reaches of Northern California, as well as ownership models (including fractional ownership) that can further reduce costs and add flexibility to your life.

This is a continuation of the brainstorming conversation held in early June in San Francisco, but new participants are most welcome.

RSVP here via East Bay Cohousing

$10 per person for space rental/meeting fees ($5 for EBCOHO supporting members. join today and save!). Please clearly label any non-obvious ingredients in your dish (if you know, include what you're bringing in your RSVP response so others can plan to bring something complementary), especially meat and allergens (like wheat, nuts, and the like). We'll supply plates, cloth napkins, cups, water, and silverware.

The meeting will be held in the Berkeley Cohousing common house. Note: this is not a tour; please do not disturb our neighbors or wander around. An infant will be going to bed early in the building, so we will request that voices be kept down and that we step lightly. This is a private residence, with a few steps up required to enter; because one of our neighbors has a strong allergy, no pets or service animals are allowed. Please park onstreet, bike, or use public transit (North Berkeley BART is a few blocks away, and the 88 bus stops out front).

A Wisdom Council or Discussion Group of Transition Sebastopol

Calling All Elders, Earth Elders, Wannabe Elders, Soon-to-become Elders, or Interested Baby Boomers on up!

The Elders' Salon is a nonhierarchical circle of peers. We’ll introduce the discussion with some thoughts from an elder voice or thought-provoking instigator to kick off our own discovery of what it is WE think and believe about the topic; what WE want and need now and in our future; what WE think should be the course of action and attitudes as we progress into and through our older years.

WHY: There are a lot of new ideas about aging, staying youthful in body and spirit, and our role in society and local life. What have our generational contributions been and what is left undone? What are our mistakes and triumphs? If we don’t want others to determine what becomes of us in very old age, we need to be proactive and begin making conscious, thoughtful choices about our future, how we want to live and be regarded. What role do elders want to play in the coming changes; what wisdom can we offer?

Meetings are held at 6:30 PM the 4th Thursday of the month at Sequoia Village cohousing in Sebastopol.

June topic
LOSS, NEEDS, & THE GIFTS THEY CAN BRING

Again, the direction our conversation was headed last month. We were considering how to be resources for one another at the end of the May meeting.

Come to this afternoon workshop to learn more. RSVP here.

Integrative Training in

The Art of

Facilitating

Cooperative Groups

There are challenges to working effectively as a cooperative group—whether it’s an organization or community.  Often groups experience a sense of being drained by their decision making and meeting process.  Getting bogged down can be expensive:  it diminishes energy for the work of the group and undercuts the sense of joy and identification among members.  This does not have to be your experience.  Learning the art of effective meeting facilitation can help your group enhance both energy and product from your meetings—this training can help you transform your group into the more dynamic and successful entity you’ve always intended.

The trainer, Laird Schaub (assisted in this series by Cohousing Coaches Betsy Morris and Raines Cohen) has developed a facilitation approach he calls Integrative Facilitation.  This program blends community values with a holistic and participatory methodology to produce collaborative agreements based on solid communication and attention to relationship.  His approach to group work is enriched by a solid understanding of human development, a sensitivity to undercurrents, and a healthy dose of playfulness and appreciation.

The intention is to train a cadre of skilled facilitators in Northern and Central California who can be available to help each other’s communities and organizations run effective group meetings and handle difficult group situations.

Student Participants

Participants  are members of organizations or communities within a day's drive of one another in Southern Oregon, Nevada, and California. They may have a little or a lot of experience as facilitators, there are no prerequisites, just a desire to grow the skills of graceful engagement. An essential common element is that groups use consensus process for decision making.

Program will consist of in-depth didactic sessions on the components of Integrative Meeting Facilitation accompanied by hands-on demonstrations.  Full students will be given the chance to practice skills in live meetings under supervision.  All students will be able to observe these live meetings. Each student will collect a notebook of handouts on Integrative Facilitation. Full students will receive a written evaluation of their skills and have the opportunity for in-person evaluations with the trainers each weekend throughout the two-year training.

Full students commit to attending as many weekends as possible, practice with their community or organization between sessions, and to teach others in their community or organization what they are learning.  Each student will get the opportunity for live practice with host groups.  Full students are strongly encouraged to get a sample of their facilitation videotaped prior to the start of the program and another done toward the end for purposes of evaluation and for use as a teaching tool.

Auditors commit to one weekend at a time.  They will receive materials and have the chance to participate fully in the teaching and debriefing for the weekends they attend.  They will not be facilitators of the live meetings nor will they receive the benefit of the personal evaluations offered by the trainers.  Depending on space in the host community, auditors may need to find alternative housing during the weekends.

The class is open to 25 participants consisting of both full and auditing students.

Host Communities

Communities with a full-time student are encouraged to host at least one weekend during the two-year program.  Hosting includes providing room & board plus meeting space for the class.  Organizations are welcome to host weekends as well, provided they can satisfy the logistical needs of the class.

Live meetings, facilitated by the full students, will be scheduled for Friday, Saturday and Sunday.  Topics will be of the community’s or organization’s choosing and should be genuine work that needs to be addressed.  In general, it is preferred that more difficult topics be chosen, as they tend to offer better training opportunities and the results will likely be more valuable to the host.  While the intention is to use the students as facilitators as much as possible, the trainers will always be available to step in as a safety net if the students need help.

In addition to the training itself, the host community gets outside facilitation for several hours of community meetings at no charge (valued at $1200-$2000), plus a written report from Laird within two weeks summarizing the meeting results with observations about the group’s process and issues.  Lastly, the host community has the option of having up to two of its members participate as auditors at no cost.

Course Outline and Format

The Class is structured over eight, three-day weekends spanning two years with approximately three months between each session.  Thursday – late afternoon or early evening – arrival, check in.  Friday – day of training and preliminary work with host community.  Saturday – work with host community and debrief experiences.  Sunday – work with community in morning, debrief, wrap up and depart after dinner or late in the afternoon.  Thursdays or Monday there will be time for one-on-one work with the trainers.

Syllabus (expect adjustments to meet evolving group needs)

On each weekend we’ll focus on one or more aspects of the facilitator’s skill set, making clear what the skills are, as well as when and how to apply them.  When we’re working with the host’s live issues, we’ll be doing real work, trying to put these growing skills to use.

Weekend I: Working content:  Providing the essential tool kit for effectively examining

issues and developing solutions.

Weekend II: Formats:  Looking at various techniques for discussing issues and the pros and cons of each.

Weekend III: Conflict:  Understanding what’s happening when emotional distress is in play

and how to work with it respectfully and constructively.

Weekend IV: Delegation:  Identifying what considerations are plenary worthy and learning

how to delegate effectively—both to save the group time and to develop vibrant communities.

Weekend V: Consensus:  Learning the framework and values that undergird the successful application of this Quaker model to secular groups.

Weekend VI: Power Dynamics and Leadership:  Distinguishing between “power over” and

“power with” in cooperative groups, and learning how to develop and support healthy forms of leadership.

Weekend VII: Challenging Personalities:  Examining the range of common personality types, their interrelationship with each other, and learning strategies for coping with them.

Weekend VIII: Organizational Structure:  Getting an overview of a healthy model for how to draft plenary agendas, manage tasks, safeguard process, and get the work done.

We are delighted to have, once again, co-created a visible presence for cohousing at the San Francisco Green Festival, with your help -- we traditionally participate in November, but this extra Spring show debuting this year gave us a new oportunity for outreach. Several cohousing groupsprofessionals and community leaders came together at this event to educate, recruit and connect around shared living opportunities - would you care to join us for the next one? By sharing the costs and booth staffing and lists of interested people, a little engagement goes a long way, and we're including training in effective outreach and honing your message.Contact Us to get involved.

P.S. Special Thanks to Coho/US National Tours Director Neil Planchon for negotiating a great deal on a booth; Cohousing Coach Raines Cohen of East Bay Cohousing will be coordinating this one. We also are talking with area coworking groups and intentional communities about joining in the fun, and we're getting support from cohouser/Sharing Solution author Janelle Orsi.

THE COMMUNITY (more info in person and in application packet)
Condo association- 3 buildings on 2 lots sharing back, side and front yards. Total of 6 units, plus a common unit, cohousing style. Willow House, an adjacent house, is legally separate but we are in most ways socially one community and share resources (like our yard and gardens).

Physically we're about 10 min from Ashby Bart in North Oakland, close to Berkeley Bowl, Whole Foods, independently owned cafes and farmers markets. We're a collective/cooperative/consensus-based group, and we eat together about twice a week right now. There's also lots of shared space - our common unit contains shared living & dining rooms, a kitchen, guest room, laundry, art room, office, and more. Our community hosts fruit trees and gardens, 6 chickens, bees, a children's play area, a cozy swing nestled in back yard, a firepit, kiwi vines, many fruits and vegetables growing around the back and front yards, a covered workshop area, an enclosed deck, especially good for classes and gatherings, and open decks ideal for quiet contemplation over morning coffee/tea.
